GS1 QR CODE
A GS1 QR Code is a special type of QR code that follows global standards. It is designed to be scanned by machines in supply chains. Unlike a normal QR code that just holds plain text, a GS1 QR Code uses a structured format with special identifiers for each piece of data. This allows it to reliably store information like a product's unique ID, batch number, and expiration date. This standard is used worldwide for tracking products and providing trustworthy information to consumers and businesses.
A standard QR Code is like a plain text note. It might say: "ProductID=12345, Lot=ABC, ExpDate=2025-12-31" A GS1 QR Code is like a formatted database entry. It uses special Application Identifiers (AIs) to label each piece of data: "(01)12345(10)ABC(17)251231"
By the end of 2027, there is a global initiative for products in stores to move to a new 2D barcode.
This new barcode is often a GS1 Digital Link QR Code.
It will not just be a replacement; it will be a big upgrade.
It can do everything the old barcode does for scanning at the checkout.
It also provides a lot of extra information for consumers. You can scan it with your smartphone to get details like recipes, allergen info, sustainability facts, and product promotions.
This is a global industry-wide change, not just the idea of one company.
